Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt was an overnight nursing assistant in order to provide her with an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay saw how art was a powerful tool to promote social activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through art. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, but spent the summers with Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has lived for many generations. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was located in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma, and later directed the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay was a student at the college when she became interested in production for broadcast journalism. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given an assignment to watch the house and examining the trash of one of members of the jury. Her tasks left her disappointed in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the publicity industry. DuVernay was employed by a tiny studio as a Junior Publicist right after college. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999. Her agency launched numerous lifestyle and promotion networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
